Men's Lacrosse picks up win in Season Opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Charles Moran and Niko Maheras both collected two goals and an assist and Sewanee had two more players with two goals apiece as they won their home opener against Transylvania on Saturday afternoon in Sewanee, 11-7.

Moran opened the season for the Tigers with the first goal of the game just before the two-minute mark of the game off an assist from Zach Crain. Moran then connected to Niko Maheras for the Tigers' second goal with seven and a half in the first period.

The Tigers picked up two more unassisted goals before the end of the first period from Manoli Loupassi and Devon Root to go into the second period, 4-1.

Transylvania started the second period by scoring two unanswered goals to get within one of the Tigers, but an unassisted goal from Phelps Thomas and then a man-up goal from Root just over a minute later got the Tigers back ahead by two. Loupassi connected on his second goal of the game with just under three minutes in the half.

The Pioneers answered just 36 seconds later with a goal of their own as Sewanee went into the half 7-4.

Coming out of halftime Moran connected on his second goal of the game with an assist from Thomas. Transylvania connected on a goal, but Sewanee again had an answer this time, from JM DuPree

Back-to-back goals from Sage Cookerly and Niko Maheras opened the final quarter of the game. This time, Transylvania had an answer for both goals but was unable to catch the Tigers as they secured the win 11-7.

Greg Ix had 10 saves in goal for Sewanee, opening the season with a win.

Sewanee hosts a tournament in Nashville, Tenn. next weekend at Ensworth High School as they face Capital and LaGrange on Saturday at 6 p.m., and Sunday at 4 p.m.
