SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee scored on an own goal late in the first half but Oglethorpe netted the equalizer late in the second period and won with a header almost seven minutes into overtime in a 2-1 victory over the Tigers in the semifinals of the SAA Men's Soccer Championships on Friday in Memphis, Tenn.
Sewanee's season ends with the OT loss, posting a 6-7-4 overall record but 3-2-1 in conference play and 4-3-1 against league opponents. The club registered a 5-3-2 record over the last six weeks of the season after a rough start to the year.
The Tigers (6-7-4) scored in the 40
th minute after a throw-in, with
Jackson Knoll crossing from the left to the top of the six-yard box. The ball bounced off a defender's head and into the net for an own goal and a 1-0 advantage for Sewanee at the half despite the Petrels outshooting the Tigers, 11-3.
Sewanee held the 1-0 edge until the 75
th minute when Thaddeus Harp played a ball into the box for Steele Norton, who turned between two defenders and fired left-footed to the far post, into the side netting and past a diving Nathan Van Hoeve for the equalizer.
Almost seven minutes into overtime Owen VanMarter crossed from the right to the front post, where Ben Alram headed in the game-winner just before Van Hoeve reached the ball.
Van Hoeve finished with five saves and turned away numerous other crosses from Oglethorpe. Petrels goalie AJ Evans made three saves against eight total shots from the Tigers. Oglethorpe posted 21 total shots in the match.
