SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Jacorin Thomas threw for 214 yards and one touchdown, with
Dyer Barnes catching six passes for 119 yards and one TD, but Centre College scored the first 28 points of the game en route to a 35-8 victory over Sewanee in the final football game of the year for the Tigers on Saturday in Danville, Ky.
Barnes caught a 60-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter and
Cam Beasley's rush for two accounted for the only points of the game for Sewanee, which finished the season 2-8. The Tigers committed three turnovers in the contest – two fumbles and one interception.
Centre scored on four straight possessions in the first half – two to end the first quarter and the first two of the second period. Will McDaniel rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns and Jack Gohmann finished 24-of-31 passing for 229 yards and two touchdowns.
Sewanee managed only 13 yards of offense in the first half before the final minute of the second quarter, with
Walker Robinson rushing for 10 yards before a seven-yard pass play to
Garrett Gray. Thomas then rushed nine yards up the middle before finding Barnes for the 60-yard TD pass.
Thomas tossed an interception on the opening drive of the third quarter, but the defense held and forced a punt.
Isaiah Copeland intercepted Gohmann midway through the period, but the Tigers were unable to take advantage of field position, punting again after starting at the Centre 37-yard line.
Thomas fumbled on the Centre side of the field on the second play of the final period but again, the defense forced a punt by the Colonels. Centre scored the final touchdown of the game midway through the fourth quarter. Sewanee's defense held the Colonels to just 127 yards of total offense in the second half.
