SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Tre Corrigan and
Fletcher Bigham each made three 3-pointers and combined for 28 points but Sewanee struggled from behind the arc in the first half and never recovered in an 83-71 loss to Millsaps in men's basketball action Friday night in Jackson, Miss.
The Tigers (5-8, 1-1 SAA) shot just 5-for-20 from behind the arc and 10-of-31 overall in the first half, falling behind, 41-27, at the break. Sewanee made six 3-pointers in the second half and shot 45 percent overall from the field, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Corrigan led the Tigers with 15 points and six assists while Corrigan collected 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Luka Avaliani, playing in his first game since November 15, finished with 11 points and
Russ Marr added 11 as well.
Bigham and Marr opened the game with 3-pointers for the Tigers and Avaliani added one as well in the first four minutes.
Cody Baerlocher made another triple, giving Sewanee a 12-11 edge, but Millsaps scored 10 of the next 12 points, including an old-fashioned 3-point play by Mack Gorton and a 3-pointer by Evan Watson.
Rashaun Williams' field goal pulled the Tigers within six with seven minutes left in the half, but field goals from Gorton and Cameron Lumar stretched the Majors lead to 10. Baskets from Dakota Gasca and Nicholas Ughovwa made it 34-20 and a triple by Gasca put Millsaps in front, 41-27, at intermission.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Bigham early in the second half cut the deficit to 10, but that was as close as the Tigers would get the rest of the way. Sewanee trailed 53-42 with 11:51 remaining after a triple by
Reid Carrier, but Millsaps answered with a 19-2 run over the next six minutes highlighted by 10 points from Rodney Phillips, Jr.
Gasca, who posted 20 points off the bench, made a 3-pointer and Lumar's old-fashioned 3-point play ended the spurt. Corrigan finally ended the stretch with a triple and Avaliani posted an and-one and two foul shots.
Corrigan made two more triples later in the half for the Tigers.
Sewanee ends a seven-game road triple Sunday at Birmingham-Southern at 3 p.m.
