Sewanee Volleyball Opens Home Tournament Strong with 2 Wins

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Olivia Jones and Ashley Crosby hit above a .440 hitting average as the Tigers pick up two home wins in their tournament on Friday, Sept. 9 against Agnes Scott and Greensboro. 

The Tigers opened the tournament with a sweep against Agnes Scott as they had 15 service aces and 35 kills in three sets. Freshman Savannah Gann had 9 kills followed by freshman Jacqueline Weller with 6. Freshman Sophia Caruso had 7 digs and all three setters saw the court with senior Kaylee Scharfman and sophomore Emma Meyer each recording 10 assists, and senior Jessie Atkinson had 8. 

Sewanee faced Greensboro next where the Tigers were able to dig deep to pull out the win. The Tigers opened the game with a close first-set loss but fought back to win the next three tight games to come out on top. In the second set, Sewanee trailed Greensboro 12-15 but was able to shift the momentum to pull out a close 25-21 win. In the third set, the Tigers took and held the lead early, getting up 10-4 where they ran away with the set for a 25-16 win. The final set was the most competitive with a total of 7 lead changes and a combined 16 ties before the Tigers were able to close the match out. 

Olivia Jones led the Tigers in points and hitting percentage with a .643 for the game. Jones had no errors in four sets on 14 swings. Ashley Crosby had 10 kills and hit a .444. Nicole Radford contributed to Sewanee's win 7 kills and a hitting percentage of .308.

 
Adele Cassidy and Emma Meyer led the team's defense with double-digit digs. Cassidy had 17 digs and 6 assists while Meyer had 11 digs and 28 assists. 

"I'm proud of this team and loved the resilience they showed today," head coach Nancy Muller said. "They showed that they know how to fight when their backs are against the wall, and we had several players that we able to step up in big moments when they needed to." 

The Tigers play Saturday afternoon to finish out the Sewanee Invitational against Huntingdon at 5 p.m. and Asbury at 7 p.m.
