SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee field hockey opened the 2023 season with two games away in Baltimore facing Goucher and Stevenson. On Friday, the Tigers faced Goucher and dropped the game 1-3. On Saturday, they played Stevenson where they fell 0-8.
Against Goucher, the Tigers outshot the Gophers 15-9 and had a 10-7 edge in penalties but were unable to find the back of the net. Goucher scored twice in the second quarter and once in the third for a victory over the Tigers on Friday. However, with only 3:19 remaining on the clock, sophomore Sydney Simpson was able to get the Tigers on the board off a penalty stroke. Simpson led Sewanee's leaderboard with 7 shots on goal.
Saturday, the Tigers fell against Stephenson. Stevenson outshot Sewanee, 26-3, with Sewanee goalkeepers
Claire Damare and
Taylor Klesel recording 10 saves. Emma Gladstein led the Mustangs with 5 shots, one goal, and three assists. Annie Ingersoll added to the Mustang offense contributing two goals of her own from three shots.
The Tigers host the Sewanee Invitational next weekend to take on DePauw and Ohio Wesleyan.
