SEWANEE, Tenn. –
David Edge converted a penalty kick in the 79
th minute and
Stokes McConnell hit the post less than two minutes later for Sewanee, but a free kick from just outside the box by Ben Alram proved to be the game-winner in Ogelthorpe's 2-1 victory over the Tigers in men's soccer action here Friday night at Puett Field.
The Tigers (2-4-4, 0-2-1 SAA) also hit the crossbar in the first half and
Will Hawgood's header early in the second half sailed just over the crossbar.
The match remained scoreless until the 71
st minute when Oglethorpe's Cristian Medina finished a cross by JR Cozine. Sewanee knotted the match when
Payne Gridley was fouled in the box by Petrels goalkeeper Nicolas Mejia and Edge made the PK with just over 11 minutes left.
A great combination play down the left side by the Tigers set-up McConnell's blast to the far post, but it drilled the bar and bounced straight out. Cozine drew a foul in the 84
th minute just outside the box and Alram's shot curved around the wall and just inside the near post for the game-winner.
Sewanee and Oglethorpe (7-1-1, 2-0-0) split possession for the first 30 minutes of the half and the Tigers created the best scoring chance, with Gridley's shot in the 19
th minute hitting the crossbar. Hawgood's bicycle attempt was unsuccessful on the rebound and the match remained scoreless.
The Petrels created their best scoring opportunities late in the opening half, including a point-blank shot by Medina that was saved by Sewanee's Nathan VanHoeve and another cross that turned into a shot from Alram that the Sewanee goalkeeper knocked away. The Tigers survived the flurry and got to intermission scoreless.
VanHoeve finished with three saved and faced 16 total shots.
Sewanee hosts Rhodes and Hendrix for Family Weekend on October 6 and 8, the final home matches of the year for the Tigers.
