Tigers pick up win in home opener, 3-0

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Kylene Monaghan netted a goal in the first 15 seconds of Sewanee's game on Sunday against Illinois Wesleyan as the Tigers won their home opener 3-0.

The Tigers (2-1-2) played a physical game against the Titans as they came out on top. Sewanee's goal by Monaghan, Brianna Fee, and Abbie Johns, were all their first for the season. Sewanee outshot their opponents 10-3, with six on goal and only one for their opponents.

"We spoke this week about starting well and not giving them life, but coming out and getting that goal 15 seconds into the game was a great way to start everything off; to say the least!" head coach Greg Cathell said. "Cece Cobb was a lights-out 1v1 defender for us today and to put up another clean sheet is always a good thing. We look forward to a big game at Berry next weekend to start conference play."

Fee's first goal of the season came off an assist from Monaghan in the 53rd minute as her shot from outside the box hit the bottom of the crossbar and stayed in to put the Tigers up 2-0. The Tigers' third goal came with 16 minutes left on the clock as Caroline Pulliam found Johns inside the box to give the Tigers their final goal.

Sewanee's defense held their line for the second game in a row, not allowing their opponents many opportunities. Leah Atkins was an instrumental part of the defense in goal as no shots got past her.

The Tigers open up conference play next weekend at Berry on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. EST., before they return home to face No. 14 ranked Emory on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
