Edge, Scott score in Tigers' 2-2 draw

Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn.David Edge converted a penalty kick in the first half and Tyler Scott evened the match in the 71st minute, preserving a 2-2 draw for Sewanee in men's soccer action here Wednesday night at Puett Field.

The Tigers (1-1-2) dominated play in the opening 45 minutes and held a 1-0 advantage at intermission, but the Scots scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half to take the lead. Sewanee increased the intensity in the final 25 minutes and got the equalizer, pressuring the Maryville (2-2-2) goalkeeper until the final seconds.

The Tigers dominated possession in the first half and outshot the Scots, 14-2, in the period. An early chance from a bad angle by Will Pucek was knocked away by Maryville goalkeeper Mykal Manfred and Will Hawgood's blast from just outside the box went off the hands of a diving Manfred and nailed the crossbar.

Sewanee put together several other good scoring chances, including a nifty back-heel flick by Hawgood and redirect on a cross from Payne Gridley. The Tigers were finally rewarded late in the half, with a free kick by Connor Dail bouncing wide of the net and Alpha Bah drawing a foul in the box settling the ball.

Edge converted the penalty kick, into the top of the net on the left side, for a 1-0 Tigers edge in the 43rd minute.

Maryville's biggest time of possession came in the final two minutes of the period with a sequence of long throws in the Scots' offensive end and finally a corner kick, but the visitors got off just one shot and Sewanee finally cleared in the last 10 seconds to preserve the 1-0 lead at the break.

The Scots wasted little time evening the score after a bad giveaway from the Tigers in the 50th minute, with Brooklyn Muccillo converting a cross by Aidan McWilliams. Maryville kept the pressure on and took the lead almost five minutes later, this time a shot by Walker Settles that was saved but Hyatt MacDonald headed in the rebound for a 2-1 Maryville advantage.

Sewanee evened the match in the 71st minute, with a cross by Gridley passing Stokes McConnell and finding Scott on the doorstep for his second goal of the year. McConnell point-blank blast in the final minute was saved by a diving Manfred, who finished with 11 saves.

The Tigers travel to Jackson, Miss., this Saturday to face Belhaven and return home next Wednesday, taking on Covenant.
