Women's Tennis Heads to Washington and Lee for First Weekend of NCAA Championships; Despriet and Petty to Compete in Doubles Championships

INDIANAPOLIS - Announced this week by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the University of the South women's tennis team will once again be participating in the 2023 NCAA Championships both as a team and individually. 

This weekend, Sewanee heads to Lexington, Va. for the Washington and Lee Sectional. Starting May 18, the top doubles team in the nation, Brooke Despriet and Katherine Petty, will play in the individual championships.

BACK IN THE BIG DANCE: Sewanee is back in the NCAA Championships for a 10th straight season and the 29th in program history. The 29 appearances in the team tournament are the fourth-most in Division III history, trailing Emory (38), Mary Washington (34) and Pomona-Pitzer (30). 

WHY NOT WIN TWO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS? After securing the ITA Cup National Championship for Division III this past fall, Katherine Petty and Brooke Despriet will now look to the NCAA Doubles Championship starting on May 18 as the duo earned one of the 16 spots in the event. 

Ranked third in Atlantic South region, Despriet/Petty will be All-Americans at the end of the season after earning one win at the ITA Cup. They would run the table to secure the national title in Rome, Ga. 

The duo is currently 17-4 on the year and 9-4 in spring competition, playing at the No. 1 flight. 

DOUBLES DOMINANCE: Sewanee has only surrendered 12 sets to their oppoennts in doubles play. They posted an impressive 20-1 mark in league play. 

Winning 54 in the spring, each flight has 18 wins.
