SEWANEE, Tenn. - The University of the South cross country and track and field teams saw five athletes recognized on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® Team, announced on Wednesday.
Patrick Rodriguez and
Christian Shushok were both recognized on the men's side, while
Jocelyn Covaney,
Bella Francois and
Janie Schmitt were honored on the women's team.
Formerly the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), nominations are accepted by current dues-paying CSC members. To be nominated:
- A student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. The cumulative grade-point average may NOT be rounded up to 3.50.
- Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable).
- No student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and been on a college roster in that sport for two years.
Rodriguez, a senior from Germantown, Md., was a member of the Sewanee cross country program for four seasons. He posted a season-best time of 30:28.9 at the 2022 SAA Championships back in October and holds a personal time of 29:21.8 in 2019.
Graduating summa cum laude with an honors degree in Neuroscience, he is a four-year member of the SAA Academic Honor Roll, the Order of the Gown and the Dean's List.
Shushok, a junior from Blacksburg, Va., posted a 30:05 8K race at the Berry Invitational this past October.
A member of the Order of the Gown, the SAA Academic Honor Roll and the Dean's List, he is double majoring in Geology and English.
Covaney, a sophomore from Williamsburg, Va., participates in the hurdles and jumps on the women's track and field team. In 2023, she participated final of the 100 and 400 hurdles. Her 1:13.25 in the 400 hurdles was a season-best at the SAA Championships over a month ago.
Majoring in Mathematics with double minors in Biology and Chemistry, she is a member of the Order of the Gown, the SAA Academic Honor Roll and the Dean's List.
Francois, a junior from St. Louis, Mo., is a three-year letterwinner with the cross country team. This past season, she set a new personal best time of 27:58.9 in a 6K race at Berry last October.
A member of the Order of the Gown, the SAA Academic Honor Roll and the Dean's List, she is majoring in Finance with a Spanish and Business double minor.
Schmitt, a senior from Greenville, S.C., took 43rd at the NCAA South Region Championships with a 25:34.3 mark. Finishing in the top 25% of the regional event, she earned All-Academic honors by the USTFCCCA. Additionally, her PR in a 6K race came during the 2022 season against Berry (24:44.8).
Graduating with a degree in Psychology earlier this month, she is a member of the Order of the Gown, the SAA Academic Honor Roll and the University of the South Dean's List.
A total of 22 student-athletes from Centre College, Millsaps College and the University of the South make up the nominees from the Southern Athletic Association (SAA).
The Division III CSC Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structures to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Division III Academic All-America® programs.
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First- and second-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced on June 28 (women) and June 29 (men).
