Petty and Despriet Advance to NCAA Doubles Quarterfinals, Drops No. 2 CWRU

ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of the South's top doubles team Katherine Petty and Brooke Despriet had some sweet revenge over their opponents in Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey of Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) in the Round of 16 of the 2023 NCAA Doubles Championship from the USTA Main Campus in Orlando.

Playing each other two weeks ago in the second round of the team championships, the No. 2 seed in the doubles tournament took the upper hand in the previous matchup, 8-6, on May 6. However, on Friday, it was the Sewanee team that posted the 6-4, 6-4 score to eliminate the team from the championship.

Sewanee got out to a hot start by winning the first four games in the opening set before the Spartans got on the board and won the next two games.

Despriet/Petty (19-6) breezed past the competition in the next game to get within one of clinching the first set. But CWRU did not make it easy, as they made it a 5-4 real quick.

Down 30, love early in the next game, Sewanee rallied to force a deuce, and after getting the advantage, they put it away to get the first set victory, 6-4.

Similar to the first set, Despriet/Petty got out to a big lead, winning the first five games and getting within one of shutting out their opponent, but Kassaie/McCloskey stayed alive by winning the next four to make it a 5-4 score in set number two.

In the deciding game before it would be forced to a tiebreak, Sewanee posted the victory on a 40-30 serve to sweep the contest in straight sets by a 6-4 second set score.

The duo will return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET / noon CT, as they face Allaire Berl/Eleni Lazaridou of Kenyon College in the quarterfinals.
