Softball Blanks Rhodes in Series Opener

MEMPHIS - The University of the South softball team continues to make history in 2023. The Tigers defeated the Lynx of Rhodes College in a shutout on Friday, 3-0, from the Rhodes Softball Field. The win on Friday marks the first time the program has achieved a double-digit winning season in nearly two decades.

Due to rain impacting the southeastern part of middle Tennessee, including all of Sewanee, the series was moved to Memphis. Sewanee was still designated as the home team.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Rhodes had the bases loaded in the first inning with one out, but a strikeout and groundout kept the game scoreless.

-After the Lynx stranded eight runners on base in the first three innings, the Tigers finally got the bats going in the bottom half. After a lead-off double by Eve Bournias and a stolen base, Zoe Crockett laced a single to the outfield to put Sewanee on the board.

-After a Zoe steal and a popup, Alice Charboneau, following a pitching change by Rhodes, went out of the ballpark for her fourth home run and the 10th of her career to make it 3-0.

-From there, Michaela Walker retired 10 straight batters in the final 13 batters she faced to secure the victory.

HISTORY MADE FOR SOFTBALL
-For the first time since the 2005 season, the Purple and White have achieved a double-digit winning season. Now with 10 wins on the campaign, the team currently sits sixth all-time in program history for the most wins in a season.

-Additionally, the program picked up its sixth conference win, the most in the Southern Athletic Association era, and is tied for the fourth-most in the program's history.

ZOE SWIPES 20
-Also in Friday's game, junior outfielder Zoe Crockett picked up her 20th stolen base of the season, becoming the first player in the program's 20-plus year history to achieve this milestone.

-The steal came in the third inning after she drove in a run on a base knock to left field.

-Entering the weekend, the Humboldt, Tenn. native is second in the conference in steals and is in the top-25 nationally in the category.
