DANVILLE, Ky. - Thanks to 10 strikeouts by
Marshall Coley and
Matt Munn and early runs by the offense, the University of the South baseball team has the 1-0 series lead in the Opening Round of the 2023 SAA Baseball Tournament with a 3-0 blanking of Centre College, Friday night from Gary Wright Field.
With the win, Sewanee posts a 20-win season for the second time in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-After two quick outs to start the game, a
Hunter Herndon single followed by a
Will Yarbro triple made it 1-0 before the seats were warm.
-In the second, the Tigers tacked on, once again with two outs.
Mike Lewishall slashed a double to right field, and
Luke Short followed with a RBI single.
-In the seventh, the Tigers had the bases loaded when
Jadon Fetrow flew out to right for the sacrifice fly.
-On the mound, it was "Munny Time", as the sophomore struck out the first three batters he faced en route to retiring six of the first seven batters he faced.
-In the fifth, the Colonels started the frame with a leadoff triple by Teddy Holloway. During the next at-bat, with a 2-2 count, a pitch got away from
Owen Andress, and with Holloway breaking for the plate, Munn covered to tag him out for the first out of the inning.
-Munn finished out the game by retiring the final five batters he faced and 10 of the last 11.
SECOND TO TWENTY
-For the second time in program history, dating back over 100 seasons, the University of the South baseball team has eclipsed 20 wins in a season.
-With a win on Saturday, the Purple and White will match their program record of 21 set in 2019.

Matt Munn (7-3) tossed another gem for Sewanee. After
Marshall Coley threw two no-hit innings to start the game, Munn stepped on the mound and scattered three hits and a walk across seven frames with nine punchouts.

Blake Pou,
Owen Andress and
Mike Lewishall all had two hits for Sewanee, while
Will Yarbro had the RBI triple to start the game and added three walks.

Jadon Fetrow and
Luke Short each also had an RBI in the win.
CENTRE KEY STATISTICS
-Dillion Di Iorio, Teddy Holloway and Aaron Lopez all had hits for the Colonels on Friday.

Game two of the series will take place on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET/noon CT. If necessary, game three will occur following the conclusion of Saturday's first game of the day.
