HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Tigers got on the board first after a
Hunter Herndon lead-off double. After he moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch,
Blake Pou sent a ball deep in the hole at short to reach base and see Herndon touch home plate.
-The Scots tied the game in the third on a sacrifice fly, as the inning started with a free pass.
-In the fifth, after a shut-down inning by
Henry Collins on the mound, Sewanee got the offense back out there quickly. After a lead-off hit by
Charlie Teel to start the frame, he moved up to second on an errant throw by the Maryville shortstop after making a lineout catch.
-Back-to-back hits by
Will Yarbro and
Alden Wright made it 2-1 in favor of the Purple and White and forced the Scots to the bullpen. Folling a pitching change,
John Bagwell made it 3-1 on a fielder's choice RBI.
-The Tiger bats did not cool off on the racks in the sixth thanks to another quick inning by Collins. Back-to-back doubles by Herndon and Pou at the top of the order saw Sewanee's lead improve to 4-1. Two batters, Teel added a run with a base knock to the outfield.
-Trailing 5-1 into the late innings, the Scots shifted the momentum over to their dugout on the third base side. Back-to-back fielding errors by the Tigers set up the Scots to score six unearned runs and see 10 batters come to the plate.
Now leading 7-5 in the eighth, Maryville added three runs in the eighth and a lead-off solo home run in the ninth to get key insurance runs.
-Sewanee did get two runs across, as
Carson Rowland and Yarbro scored on separate wild pitches.
