No. 22 Men's Tennis Concludes California Trip with Win over Amherst

MALIBU, Calif. / SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The University of the South men's tennis team split on its final days of the team's spring break trip. Sewanee defeated Amherst (Mass.), 7-2, late Wednesday night. On Thursday, the Tigers dropped a decision to NAIA opponent Westmont (Calif.), 5-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED, AMHERST
-Sewanee completed the sweep in doubles, as the team improved to 22-8 in spring competition. No. 18 Jordan Theron and Quinn Wicklund (10-1) extended their winning streak to seven straight matches with an 8-4 victory at the top flight. 

-Peyton Erck/Noah Holsclaw (6-1) and Gil Weston/Talman Ramsey (5-3) also earned wins in doubles. 

-In singles, No. 8 Theron (12-3) improved his win streak to seven straight with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Edred Opie at the No. 1 flight. In spring play, the junior is 7-1. 

-Quinn Wicklund (9-3) used a straight set victory at the No. 3, while Noah Holsclaw (7-3) earned a tiebreak win over Sujit Chepuri, 7-6 (5), 1-6, 10-5. 

-Talman Ramsey (6-2) secured the victory at the No. 6 position.

HOW IT HAPPENED, WESTMONT
-Playing an NAIA school, the scoring is a bit different than Division III. Whoever wins two-of-three doubles flights collect one point. Westmont secured the No. 1 and No. 2 flights to get out to a 1-0 lead. 

-The Warriors secured wins at the first three flights to secure the match. 

-Matt Barnett (3-1) and Ryan Stafford (1-2) earned victories for the Tigers. Barnett posted a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win at the No. 4, while Stafford rallied down a set to knock off Presto Hastings in a third-set tie break, 12-10.
