NASHVILLE - The University of the South men's lacrosse team battled in an intensive defensive contest with Messiah University from Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville. The Tigers defeated the Falcons, 8-7 on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-An offensive first quarter, the Purple and White rolled to a 3-0 lead.
Davis Gillenwater started the game with a goal with less than 11 minutes left in the period.
-Later in the quarter,
JoJo Fogarty made it a 2-0 lead for the Purple Tigers.
-Near the end of the quarter, after
Jack Selner forced a turnover and a
Mac Elliott picked up the ground ball,
Ashton Anton later struck for the Tigers' third goal of the quarter.
-To start the second quarter,
Charlie Warren won the face off, and later,
Jack Westfall struck for the goal to push Sewanee's lead to 4-0.
-Westfall was around again with under eight minutes left in the half. After Anton picked up the ground ball on a Sewanee shot attempt, Westfall found the back of the cage to make it 5-0.
-After Messiah got the ball back on an out-of-bounds situation, the Falcons went down the field and scored their first goal of the game with 5:52 left in the half.
-Messiah added a late first half goal to make it a 5-2 game at the break.
-The Falcons started the third stanza with a quick strike to make it a 5-3 lead for the Tigers. Adding another goal, Messiah had a one-goal deficit with 9:10 left in the third.
-Sewanee had goals from
Devon Root and
Phelps Thomas to give the Tigers the 7-5 lead after three quarters.
-A defensive bout for most of the final stanza, a key insurance goal by
Davis Gillenwater would be beneficial for the Tigers late.
-Messiah had two goals, one via man-up, with under a minute left in the game, but the Tigers stood tall to pick up the victory.

Jack Selner forced four turnovers in the win, while
Stew Moxley picked up four ground balls.

Greg Ix (3-2) stopped six shots to pick up the dub inside the cage.
MESSIAH KEY STATISTICS
-Dean Gillette, Zach Drake and Aaron Show each had two goals for the Falcons.
-Josh Grove (4-2) made 11 saves in the loss.

The Tigers return to historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium for a Monday afternoon showdown with Scranton. Face off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
