LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 10 University of the South women's tennis team began 2023 the same way they have in 35 of the last 36 seasons: with a victory. The Tigers defeated the Captains of No. 23 Christopher Newport University, 7-2, late Friday night as a part of the W&L Invitational inside the Duchossois Tennis Center on the campus of Washington and Lee University.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Emma Smith led Sewanee's charge at doubles. The duo (4-1) was forced to a tiebreak with Kierseten Chang/Kendra Womack, but it was Sewanee that came out on top, 8-7 (2).

Brooke Despriet (2-1) earned her first win of the spring with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) result over Tessa Trate at the No. 2.

Natalia Nassar (1-0) earned her first win of the year with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) dub at the No. 4 flight.
-For the University of the South women's team, it is the 13th straight season the team has won a season opener. Since 1988, Sewanee has secured a season-opening victory in 35 of the last 36 years.
