COLUMBUS, Miss. - The University of the South softball team dropped two decisions on the first day of the MUW Invitational, hosted by the Mississippi University for Women. Sewanee suffered a 6-1 decision to the hosts in game one and later an 8-7 defeat by the hands of Covenant College, Friday from Don Usher Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED, MUW
-In the opener, MUW tacked on three runs each in the first two frames to lead 6-0 after two.
-Sewanee avoided the shutout with a
Hannah Wilson base knock to score
Zoe Crockett.

HOW IT HAPPENED, COVENANT
-Sewanee had help in scoring its first run of the game. After a leadoff walk by
Zoe Crockett, she would swipe second and third. After collecting the thefts,
Maggie Barker followed with a base hit up the middle to get the Purple and White on the board first.
-The lead would be erased in the third by the Scots in the bottom of the third, as they scored five times in the frame, capped by a two-run triple to make it a 5-1 affair.
-The Tigers avoided the shut-down inning in a big way in the top of fourth. After a lead-off single by
Eve Bournias and two outs later,
Michaela Walker brought Bournias home on a base hit up the middle.
-After a
Madilyn Parker two-bagger and a Crockett free pass to load the bases, Barker came through again. The freshman dumped a base hit to left field for a two-RBI at-bat to shrink the deficit to one run, 5-4.
-Next up,
Hannah Wilson gave the Purple and White the lead again with a two-run double.
-Trailing 6-5 halfway through, Covenant evened the game again with a base hit up the middle.
-In the fifth, after a Bournias lead-off single, Walker would later bring her home on an RBI groundout.
-The Scots ultimately had the final answer in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run frame.
-Thanks to Covenant's strong defense, Sewanee left a runner on in the sixth and seventh to seal the victory.

Zoe Crockett walked three times in four plate appearances with three stolen bases.

COVENANT KEY STATISTICS
-Mary Elaine Mitchell and Helena Nagy posted three hits each to pace the Scots. Olivia Stefl drove in two.
UP NEXT
The second and final day of the tournament takes place on Saturday. Due to the threat of inclement weather in the area, game times have been pushed up. Sewanee and Covenant will now play at 9 a.m., while the Tigers will tangle with the Owls in the final game of the tourney at 1 p.m.
