Thomson scores as Tigers advance to SAA finals in a 3-0 win over Hendrix

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Kate Thomson scored the game-winning goal for the Tigers, helping top-seeded Sewanee to a 3-0 victory over Hendrix in the semifinals of the Southern Athletic Association Championships at Puett Field on Friday afternoon.

The Tigers (12-1-4) advance to the finals this Sunday at 1 p.m. CT to face Rhodes.

Thomson found the back of the net in the 30th minute off a free kick by Ashlyn Richards for her first goal of the season. The Tigers added midway through the second as Brianna Fee posted her 10th goal of the season following a shot by Khiana Roarback. Roarback added her own goal just six minutes later to put the Tigers up 3-0.

The Tigers maintained possession for the majority of play and held their opponents to only four shots, none on goal the entire semifinals. Sewanee outshot Hendrix, 24-4, in their victory.

Fee drew a yellow card from Hendrix to produce a free kick for the Tigers taken by Richards. She found Thomson open in the back of the net for the first goal of the match. The Tigers created several other great opportunities in the first half as Cece Cobb hit the top of the crossbar early in the first and Kylene Monaghan produced a great cross but no Tigers were able to connect.

In the second half, the Tigers created more opportunities as Brianna Fee scored with 67 minutes on the clock off a save by the Hendrix goalie. Just six minutes later, Samantha Ferry posted a shot and Roarback found the back of the net for their third goal of the night.

The Tigers added a pair of late insurance goals in the second to secure their win, both off of rebounds from shots taken by Roarback and Ferry. Sewanee subbed freely in the final minutes, keeping players fresh for the finals on Sunday.

In the other semifinals, No.3 Rhodes outlasted No.2 Centre as they advanced to the finals after a 4-2 win in penalty kicks. The Tigers will face No.3 Rhodes for a rematch of the 2021 SAA finals at Sewanee on Sunday at 1 p.m.
