Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's hoops falls at home, 73-70

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee's Russ Marr registered 19 points but Maryville posted a 19-4 run midway through the second half and held off a late run by the Tigers, with the Scots claiming a 73-70 victory in men's basketball action here Wednesday night at Juhan Gymnasium.

The Tigers (1-2) led 38-35 at halftime and extended the advantage to 48-41 with 14:35 remaining on a layup by Blake Bouldin, but the home team made just 2-of-8 shots and committed six turnovers over the next seven minutes.

Maryville (1-2) took advantage, scoring 19 of the next 23 points, including five apiece from Simon Wilbar and R.J. Simmons. Chase Morgan, who netted a game-high 22 points, added two field goals during the stretch and the Scots connected on 5-of-8 free throws during the spurt.

Fletcher Bigham's layup with 7:15 remaining ended the run and he added 1-of-2 foul shots and then a layup on the next two possessions for the Tigers, cutting the deficit to three. Two driving layups by Morgan and a basket by Daryl Rice pushed the lead back to eight for the Scots.

Tre Corrigan got a layup to fall and Marr's two free throws with 3:49 to play made it a four-point game. Cody Berlocher added a basket and Marr missed the second foul shot with 2:05 remaining, with Maryville maintaining a one-point edge.

The teams traded free throws and Jose Rodriguez netted two for the Scots before Marr missed a layup on the other end. Rice added two more from the charity stripe for Maryville and 1-of-2 with 14 seconds to play for a six-point lead.

Corrigan nailed a 3-pointer with just under four seconds remaining and the inbounds went off the hands of Morgan, giving Sewanee one last chance. The difficult inbounds for the Tigers (the ball was on the sideline but near the baseline on the Sewanee offensive end) did not result in a good look, with Marr's heave from 65-feet hitting the backboard and nothing else at the buzzer.

Corrigan finished with 15 points and Bigham added 10, but Sewanee committed 18 turnovers, which Maryville turned into 12 points. The Scots also made 24-of-33 at the foul line in the game in the contest that featured 44 fouls. The Tigers hit 18-of-23 at the foul line.

Morgan added 10 boards to go with his 22 points and Wilbar netted 12 points off the bench for the Scots.

Graham Smith was fouled on a 3-pointer about two minutes into the game and made all three foul shots and Rashaun Williams drilled a triple the next time down the floor for an early 8-4 lead for the Tigers, but Maryville answered with a 6-0 spurt aided by a basket and then two free throws by Morgan and a layup from Simmons.

Neither team scored for almost three minutes and the Scots broke the streak with a pair of 3-pointers, one each for Kobe Franklin and Jaylon Green. Corrigan's triple for Sewanee broke an almost six-minute scoring drought for the home team.

Wilbar's 3-pointer gave Maryville a six-point edge at the 11-minute mark before the Tigers posted a 7-1 run to tie the contest at 20. Williams collected two free throws and Marr made a layup plus the foul and then another layup from Marr.

Jackson Garner's 3-pointer pushed the Scots advantage back to four, but Sewanee answered again, this time with a 12-0 spurt over the next three minutes. Corrigan's old-fashioned 3-point play started the run and Bouldin collected a field goal before a triple by Reid Carrier, who also made 1-of-2 at the foul line. Carrier's second 3-pointer of the half gave the Tigers a 32-24 lead with five minutes left in the half.

Sewanee stretched the advantage to nine, but a basket by Simmons and two free throws for Wilbar cut the deficit to five for the Scots. Marr answered with two foul shots, but Morgan connected on four attempts at the charity stripe in the final minute for a 38-35 Tigers edge at intermission.

Marr netted 11 points while Corrigan added eight and Carrier posted seven off the bench for Sewanee. Morgan led all scorers with 13 points.

Sewanee travels to Birmingham, Ala., this weekend, facing Belhaven on Friday at 5 p.m. and Brevard College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
