Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer NCAA Tournament run ends to No. 2 Washington University

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Leah Atkins posted eight saves as Sewanee women's soccer fell to No. 2 Washington University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament late Sunday night at Francis Olympic Field. The Tigers NCAA run is the farthest a team has made in school history.

Junior Kylene Monaghan and senior Maggie O'Hare posted the Tiger's lone shots for the day, as Atkins in goal and the Sewanee defensive line faced pressure the entire match as the Bears tallied 24 shots, 12 on goal. The Bears registered the most shots on goal that an opponent has had all season against the Tigers.

The Bears controlled the ball for most of the game as Grace Ehlert got the game-winning goal for the Bears with a shot that bounced between the crossbar and the turf, barely crossing the line for the goal. Ehlert hit the crossbar a second time, this shot again bouncing off the top into the net. The Bears were fouled in the box and converted the penalty stroke as the ball just narrowly found its way past Atkins for their third goal.

"When we look back on the 2023 Sewanee Women's Soccer season years from now, I'm confident that our student-athletes, parents, and fans will look back on it as a historic season!" Stated head coach Greg Cathell. "A 14-2-4 record, Regular Season SAA Champions for the second year in a row, an undefeated record in conference play, the program's first post-season conference championship, the first NCAA Tournament win in the history of the program, and an 18-game unbeaten streak. I want to thank our players for their commitment to excellence both in and out of the classroom and for making Sewanee so proud. When I came here in 2020, we had dreams and the belief that we could build something special here at Sewanee, together we have. Congratulations to this team for being the definition of what it means to be champions! YSR!"

The Tigers wrap up their season, 14-2-4, their two losses coming from the No. 1 ranked team at the time, Johns Hopkins at the beginning of their season, and the No. 2 ranked team, Washington University to end their record-breaking season. The Tigers completed several firsts for the program as they won the SAA tournament for the first time in program history and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time. They were the third program in Sewanee's history to make it to the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers were 7-0 and allowed only two goals in conference play.
