SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Tyler Cozzie found the back of the net in the first 20 minutes for Sewanee but a late goal by Hendrix led to a 1-1 draw, the third in four conference matches for the Tigers, in men's soccer action here Sunday at Puett Field.
Sewanee (3-4-6, 0-1-3) held the lead for a little more than 60 minutes but was unable to put away the Warriors (3-5-2, 1-2-1).
Sewanee dominated the first half, outshooting the Warriors, 11-1, and controlling the run of play from the opening kickoff. Cozzie's shot from near the penalty spot on a cross from
Stokes McConnell was saved in the first 10 minutes but the junior was finally rewarded in the 17
th minute.
On a corner kick the ball bounced to McConnell and he dropped a pass to
David Edge, who crossed to Cozzie between the penalty spot and top of the 18. Cozzie's shot stayed low, got through the traffic in front of the goalkeeper and sailed into the side netting on the left of the goal for a 1-0 advantage.
Will Pucek and
Will Hawgood produced good chances for the Tigers midway through the period, but Hendrix goalkeeper James Leone was up to the challenge. Jake Nelson had the only shot of the half for the Warriors.
The Warriors won more of the 50-50 balls in the second half, though the teams were equal in shots for the period at 6-6. Ayden Putnam's shot 10 minutes into the half was saved by Sewanee's
Nathan Vanhoeve and Cozzie and
Payne Gridley's attempts missed the net midway into the second 45 minutes.
The match remained 1-0 Tigers until the 78
th minute when a throw-in from Holt Bliss found the head of Putnam and sailedover Vanhoeve's head, bouncing on the goal line and into the net at the far post, equalizing for the Warriors.
Vanhoeve made two saves and faced seven total shots for Sewanee while Leone finished with nine saves against 17 shots from the Tigers.
Sewanee plays its last three matches of the regular season on the road, starting next weekend with outings at Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern.
