Men's Lacrosse Falls to #3 Christopher Newport in NCAA Tournament

Newport News, VA: The University of the South Men's Lacrosse team's postseason run came to an end on Saturday, May 14th, falling to #3 Christopher Newport (CNU) 29-5. 

Inside the Matchup:

Christopher Newport (17-1) 29, Sewanee (9-9) 5.

How it Happened

- CNU got out to a fast start, scoring a goal off the first face off of the game, taking a 1-0 lead seven seconds into the first quarter. 

- CNU used a 9-0 first quarter run to separate themselves from the Tigers early. 

- Davis Gillenwater got the Tigers on the board in the last second of the opening quarter, on an inside finish to cut the lead to 9-1. 

- The Captains would score 9 more goals in the second quarter.

- Gillenwater would score two more goals in the second quarter, the first off an assist from Jack Westfall, and the second coming from Will Wyckoff.

- Sewanee scored the first goal of the second half, when Gillenwater finished a feed from Ryan Hoffstetter to cut the lead to 18-4.

- Senior Drew Mullen scored the final goal of the game, putting a pass from Gillenwater in the back of the net.

Notes and Nuggets:

- The loss pushes the Tiger's NCAA Tournament record to 1-5 after registering their first ever NCAA Tournament win this season. 

- The Tigers made the tournament for the fifth time in program history, and the first time since 2017.

Season Wrap Up

- The Tigers wrap up 2022 after a very successful end to the season. The Tigers won the SAA Tournament Championship, defeating Rhodes in the title game. Sewanee also won and also hosted their first ever NCAA Tournament game in 2022, defeating Benedictine 18-9.
