Men's Lacrosse Opens SAA Tournament with 18-9 Rout of Hendrix

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The University of the South men's lacrosse team rocked Hendrix College early and rolled past the Warriors in the opening round of the 2022 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Men's Lacrosse Tournament, 18-9, Saturday night inside historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Despite the Jack Westfall goal nearly five minutes into the game, both offenses were sputtering at the start. However, Sewanee saw three straight goals in nearly a two and a half minute span. Luke Valentine went back-to-back to give Sewanee the 4-0 lead with 3:25 left in the period. 

-Hendrix made it a 4-1 game later in the opening frame, but it was all Sewanee from there. The Tigers outscored the Warriors, 7-1, in the second period, including man-up goals by Valentine and Ryan Hofstetter. Sewanee took an 11-2 lead into the locker room. 

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Ten separate Tigers contributed with a goal on Saturday night, as Luke Valentine led the way with five points on four goals and an assist. 

-Phelps Thomas also dropped five points with three assists and two goals, 

-Davis Gillenwater laced a hat trick, while Ryan Hofstetter added three assists and a goal.

-Devon Root and Joe Orem each scooped up four ground balls, while Orem added two forced turnovers. 

-Charlie Warren won 18-of-27 face offs he saw on Saturday night, while Greg Ix (3-4) made 10 saves and recorded a save percentage of 62.5% in 55 minutes. 

HENDRIX KEY STATISTICS
-Maximus LaMendola scored four points to lead Hendrix with three assists and a goal. Patrick Dellinger made five caused turnovers. 

UP NEXT
Sewanee will next take on (2) Birmingham-Southern in the semifinals on Friday night in Danville, Ky. on the campus of Centre College. Game times will be announced by Monday afternoon.
