ROME, Ga. - Brooke Despriet and
Katherine Petty wrapped up a phenomenal weekend as they represented the University of the South by being named the Champions of Division III Doubles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Cup, Saturday from the Rome Tennis Center.
The No. 4 team in the draw advanced to the final after winning three contests in the main draw. In the Round of 16, Despriet/Petty defeated Cate Cushing/Trinity Levy of Trinity (Texas), 6-1, 6-3.
Friday in the quarterfinals, the Tigers duo knocked off Carnegie Mellon's (Pa.) Crystal Zhou/Danna Taylor, 6-4, 6-3. Later that day, Despriet/Petty eliminated the top-seed in the draw, Shianna Guo and Sylwia Mikos of Chicago (Ill), 6-4, 6-3, to advance to Saturday's final.
Playing its second straight UC opponent in Claudia Ng and Perene Wang, the Tigers were not phased, as Despriet/Petty rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win to capture the championship for Division III Women's Tennis in doubles.
This is Sewanee's second doubles team in program history to win the small college national championship for Division III, joining Kristin Ialacci/Linnie Wheeless who won the event in the fall of 1993.
Along with their victory at the ITA Regional Championships, Despriet/Petty will also be named All-Americans by the ITA, which will be announced at the end of the 2022-23 season.
Additionally,
Alice Hall and
Ansley Carpenter, who made it to the semifinals of the main draw in this tournament, will also be named ITA All-Americans after collecting a Round of 16 win at the ITA Cup. In addition, Hall will be named All-America in Singles after collecting an opening-round win in Rome.
Sewanee will open the spring slate of the 2022-23 schedule in February.
