SEWANEE, Tenn. - The University of the South men's tennis team dropped a close one, 5-4, to the Phoenix of Cumberland University, Thursday afternoon from the Bruton-Guerry Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Alejandro Becker and
Jack Metzger picked up their first win of the season as a doubles duo with an 8-7 victory at the No. 1 flight, but the visitors won the other two points to lead 2-1.

Matt Barnett,
Noah Holsclaw and
Jax Harbour each claimed their first win of 2021 wins in singles. Holsclaw went to a third set with Hugues N'Goma. After dropping the second set to force the deciding third set, the sophomore picked up a 6-4 win in the set to win the No. 3 flight.
-Barnett and Harbour won their respective singles points in straight sets, but the Phoenix clinched the match with three wins in singles.
-Cumberland is ranked 21st in the latest NAIA national rankings. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has not released preseason rankings for Division III. Sewanee ended the shortened 2020 campaign at 21st.
