Men’s Tennis Struggles with Top-Ranked Emory

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The No. 21 University of the South men's tennis team dropped identical 7-2 decisions to top-ranked Emory University, Saturday afternoon from the Bruton-Guerry Tennis Center.

Emory finished the 2020 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings as the best team in NCAA Division III. The Eagles won the 2019 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships.

HOW IT HAPPENED, MATCH #1
-Emory opened the day by taking two of three doubles matches. Alejandro Becker and Liam Baer struggled at the No. 1 point with No. 15 Hayden Cassone/Antonio Mora.

-The Tigers secured the No. 3 point thanks to Jack Metzger and Peyton Erck downing Andrew Essess/Hassan Kenawi, 8-4.

-In singles, Jackson Davis won the No. 6 point, 6-4, 6-3, to avoid the sweep against the Eagles.

-Matt Barnett, Jack Metzger and Ryan Olps competed against nationally-ranked foes. Barnett took No. 18 Cassone to a third set but ultimately fell, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED, MATCH #2
-In the second match, Baer and Barnett battled with No. 15 Cassone/Mora in doubles, but the Emory team won its second match on the day, downing the Sewanee team, 8-3.

-The Purple and White's two wins in the nightcap came in singles. Ryan Olps picked up his fourth win of the season with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 victory at the No. 2 point.

-Jackson Davis won his second singles match on the day with his 6-7, 6-4, 12-10 win at the No. 4 point.
