Men's Basketball Unable to Stop Colonels in SAA Opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The University of the South men's basketball team fell to the Colonels of Centre College, 96-68, Saturday afternoon from Juhan Gymnasium. It was the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opener for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Tigers were able to maintain a 10-point deficit at the halftime break, 34-24. However, the visitors, thanks to 18 points by Carter Baughman, pulled away on a 29-11 run in about a seven-minute span. 

-Centre, who drained 16 triples on the day and finished with a 61.7% mark from the field (37-of-60) thanks to 24 points off turnovers, limited the hosts to less than 30% from downtown. 

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Colin Kahl matched his career-high on Saturday for the Purple and White, posted 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting and added five boards. 

-Luka Avaliani also posted a career-best in the point category with 14 points and matched his best in field goals made with six. The freshman also contributed eight rebounds. 

CENTRE KEY STATISTICS
-Carter Baughman was unstoppable in the contest, dropping a career-best 40 points on 14-of-20 from the floor. 11 of his 14 field goals came from behind the arc, as he finished 11-of-15 in the category. 

-Dustin Gerald added 18 points and five boards, while RJ Smith contributed 13 points, seven dimes and six boards. 

UP NEXT
The Tigers will break for Final Exams and Christmas before returning to the hardwood on Wednesday, Dec. 29 at Washington and Lee for their holiday tournament in Lexington, Va.
