Despiret and Hall Advance to Doubles Semis; Women's Tennis Hosts ITA Regional Championships

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The University of the South women's tennis team, who finished sixth in the national Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll last spring, saw three student-athletes make it to the quarterfinals of the main draw in singles at the annual ITA Regional Championships this past weekend, Oct. 1-3, hosted by the University of the South. In addition, a doubles team also made it to the semifinals of the event in the main draw. 

Overall, the Purple and White posted a 44-22 record in singles and 23-11 in doubles over the three-day event.

SINGLES MAIN DRAW HIGHLIGHTS
-12 Tigers played in the main draw, and seven advanced to the Round of 16, the most the program has seen in recent years. Three of the eight quarterfinal spots belonged to the Purple and White, and they were all freshmen.  

-Sarah Livingston made her way to the quarterfinals with straight set victories over Camille Fremaux of Millsaps (6-0, 6-1), Katherine Sherman of Centre (6-1, 7-5) and Stephanie Shulman of Emory (6-2, 6-1. Sherman was ranked No. 7 in the draw. In the quarterfinal, the Fairfax, Va. native battled to a three-set contest with Christina Watson of Emory. 

-Ranked fifth in the draw, Brooke Despriet also made easy work of her opponents in the main draw. The Cumming, Ga. native recorded victories over Alyssa McSpadden (Piedmont), 6-1, 6-0, Ella Rueff (Centre), 6-0, 6-1, and teammate Caroline Adams, 6-2, 6-1. She was eliminated from the tournament by eventual finalist Kristal Dule of N.C. Wesleyan. 

-Ansley Carpenter took care of Khin Lwin of Belhaven, 6-0, 6-0, and Arya Dudipala of Emory, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the Round of 16. The Newnan, Ga. native secured her spot in the semifinals after teammate Emma Smith, ranked second in the draw, was forced to retire in the third set. The freshman also went three sets with Ana Christina Perez in her quarterfinal showdown. 

-Smith, prior to her retirement, breezed past Melissa Gish of Piedmont (6-2, 6-1) and Abby Caddick of Methodist (6-2, 6-0). The junior qualified for the NCAA Singles Championships a year ago and advanced to the quarterfinals at the national event. 

-Natalia Nassar, ranked sixth in the regional draw, advanced to the Round of 16 with wins over Jill Lawrence of Methodist and Hannah Doherty of Centre, both coming in straight sets. 

-Adams also secured straight-set dubs over Toni Laney of Methodist and Sam Falcon of Emory. 

-Freshman Alice Hall won two matches in the draw, defeating Rhodes and Emory. 

DOUBLES MAIN DRAW HIGHLIGHTS
-Six doubles teams played for Sewanee, and they all advanced at least one round in the main draw. 

-Despriet/Hall secured a spot in the final four of the doubles draw as the team breezed past Millsaps and N.C. Wesleyan by 8-1 scores. In the quarters, the dual battled with Stephanie Shulman and Sam Falcon of Emory, but the freshmen team prevailed with an 8-5 score. 

-Ranked third in the draw, the team played a three-set battle with Emma Cartledge and Jessica Fatemi of Emory, as the Tigers forced a third set after the teams traded identical 6-3 set scores. However, in the deciding set, it went the way of the Eagles, 6-4. 

-Smith/Nowak and Nassar/Carpenter advanced to the quarterfinals. Nassar/Carpenter played a tough contest in the Round of 16, defeating Kristal Dule/Eleonora Rescia of N.C. Wesleyan, 8-7 (5). 

B1 SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
-Three Tigers advanced to the semifinal in this draw, Morgan Downing, Lauren Kadow and Lauren Wilson, with Downing and Wilson appearing in the final. 

-Downing, a senior from Hilton Head Island, S.C., won the draw with four wins in the draw. In the final, she would defeat Wilson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. 

-Wilson, a junior from Big Canoe, Ga., rolled past Allison Dempsey of Piedmont, 6-0, 6-3, in her first round of competition. In the quarterfinals, she battled with Kate McGough of Rhodes, taking the match with two separate tiebreaks, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-6 (5). 

-Wilson would take care of teammate Kadow in the semis, 7-6 (4), 6-2, before falling to Downing in straight sets in the final. 

-Kadow swept Isabella Hutchins of Millsaps, 6-0, 6-0 and defeated Julia Darkey of Rhodes, 6-2, 6-2. 

B2 SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
-The Tyer Jones sisters, Bradley Tyer Jones and Nelson Tyer Jones, made it to the semifinals of the B2 draw. Bradley defeated Piedmont and Rhodes, while Nelson beat Belhaven and Millsaps. 

-Sarah Gray, after falling in the first round of the draw, won the next three matches in the consolation bracket. 

B3 SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
-Sydney Wray and Alexandra Smyth both qualified for the semifinal in this draw. Wray won two matches against Centre and Oglethorpe, while Smyth secured victories over Belhaven and Piedmont. 

B1 DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
-In this draw, three of the four teams in the semis were from the University of the South, as Julie Kyle/Wilson and Downing/Gracie Hughes advanced to the final. 

-After earning a bye in the draw, Kyle/Wilson secured an 8-2 win over Piedmont and later defeated teammates Tessa Shackelford/Kaylin Thompson in the semifinals. In the final, the duo took down a second Sewanee team in Downing/Hughes, 8-6, to claim the victory in the draw. 

-Downing/Hughes also won two matches in the draw. 

-After falling in a tight battle in the first round, 8-7 (8), Gray/N. Tyer Jones went on to win the consolation bracket. 

B2 DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
-B. Tyer Jones/Kadow played in the semifinals of the B2 draw. 

-Smyth/Wray won the consolation bracket after dropping a tight match with Millsaps, 8-7 (5).
