Unbeaten Streak for Men's Soccer Ends at Five with Defeat to Emory

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee men's soccer team allowed two second half goals to the Eagles of Emory University, as the Tigers suffered their first loss at home this season with a 2-1 setback Wednesday night inside Puett Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The teams battled the midfield the first 20 minutes of play, with five combined shots.

-In the 39th minute, on a free kick, Severin Velasco passed to Rhodes Hall, who found Ben Vaeth in front of the net for his second goal of the year.

-The Eagles attempted two shots in the final five minutes of the opening period but were off-target. Sewanee took the 1-0 lead into the locker room.

-Seconds into the second half, Sewanee had back-to-back shot attempts by Thompson Schollaert and Velasco that were both saved by the Emory keeper.

-In the 53rd minute, seconds after James Murray ricocheted a shot, Owen Hallauer found the ball in the box and scored on the left side of the net to even the match at a goal apiece.

-In the 63rd minute, Emory took the lead for good with a goal by William Jones off a corner kick.

-After that, the visitors held the home team to four shots and only one on goal.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Thompson Schollaert and Alpo Sipilä each recorded three shots and two on goal.

-James Murray (5-2-1) allowed his first goal in nearly 322 minutes in the 53rd minute, as he saved seven shots in full time.

EMORY KEY STATISTICS
-Nate Sampson led the Eagles with five total shots, three on goal.

-Max Carlson (3-0-1) saved six shots for the visitors in full time.

UP NEXT
Sewanee will now turn its attention to Southern Athletic Association play. The Tigers will open conference play with a match with the Vikings of Berry College Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at Puett Field.
