No. 30 Women's Tennis Wraps Up 2019 Season at NCAA Championships

ATLANTA - The 30th ranked Sewanee women's tennis team were edged from a victory thanks to two singles wins late by the No. 23 Generals of Washington & Lee Saturday morning in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships at the Woodruff P.E. Center on the campus of Emory University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Sewanee opened the match with two straight wins in doubles, taking the No. 1 (Ellie Czura/Catherine Owen) and No. 3 (Taylor Sprouse/Jordan Besh) points. However, the Generals avoided the sweep with a win at the No. 2 that was forced into a tiebreak, 8-7 (8-6).

-In singles, W&L claimed its first lead of the match with wins at the No. 2 and No. 6 points, 3-2, but Sewanee stormed back to claim the 4-3 advantage with wins by Catherine Owen at the No. 1, 6-0, 6-4, and Jordan Besh at the No. 3, 6-4, 7-6.

-However, the Generals would rally to steal the final two points at the No. 4 and No. 5 to clinch the match to end Sewanee's season.

-W&L advances to face the winner of Emory and N.C. Wesleyan in the third round on Sunday.

-Sewanee finishes the regular season with a 17-9 record, claimed the program's seventh straight Southern Athletic Association's Regular Season and Tournament Championship, and earned the Player of the Year and Coach of the Year from the conference.

UP NEXT
Catherine Owen will next compete in the NCAA Singles Championships, beginning May 24 in Kalamazoo, Mich. 

The draw for the individual championship will be done by the NCAA women's tennis committee and will be released on May 23 by 1 p.m. Eastern time by the NCAA.
