Women's Basketball Uses Strong Fourth Quarter to Down Colonels in SAA Opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee women's basketball team used a 23-13 fourth quarter to rally past the Colonels of Centre College in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opener, as the Tigers snapped a two-game losing skid with a 57-50 victory on Saturday afternoon from Juhan Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Centre got out to a 12-5 lead with 5:42 left in the first quarter, but the Tigers used a 7-4 run to cut the deficit to one point, 16-15. The Tigers made it a one-point game on a Kinsley Logan layup with seconds remaining in the period.

-No team had more than a four-point lead at one point throughout the second stanza. However, the Tigers held the Colonels to nine points in the period thanks to a 4-of-15 mark from the field. While out-rebounding the opposition, 10-8, each Sewanee player that played in the period collected a rebound.

-Lakeisha Phillips sank a key layup with 1:33 left in the half to give Sewanee a 27-25 advantage.

-Centre was able to make it a five-point affair in the third quarter, 37-32, but Sewanee trailed by just three points after 30 minutes of play.

-To start the fourth quarter, the Tigers went on a 6-0 run to shift the lead back to the home team, 40-37, but a Madison Marcum triple from downtown evened the score again at 40 points apiece.

-Later in the period, after three made free throws by Kat Wilson to give the visitors the 48-47 advantage, the Tigers went on a 10-2 run in the final 2:08 of the contest to not only retake the lead but also to seal the victory.

-In the final stanza, the Tigers shot 7-of-15 from the field and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. Additionally, Sewanee posted 11 rebounds, five on the offensive glass, to Centre's three.

-The contest had nine ties and 10 lead changes in the victory for Sewanee.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Ellie Treanton led the Tigers with 12 points and added two offensive boards.

-Kinsley Logan added 10 points and four assists.

-Abby Young collected a team-high eight rebounds and added seven points.

-Off the bench, Lakeisha Phillips totaled 11 points and five boards, while Ashley Stewart grabbed seven rebounds.

CENTRE KEY STATISTICS
-Madison Marcum led the Colonels with 12 points, while Kat Wilson totaled 11 points and added five boards.

-Abigail Wehby dished out seven of the team's 10 assists, and Ellen Hicks totaled 12 rebounds.

UP NEXT
Sewanee will step back out of league play with a non-conference tilt against the Wolves of Wesleyan (Ga.) on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. from Juhan Gymnasium.
