Volleyball Opens Fall Break Trip with Sweep of Owls; Connolly Surpasses 2,500 Assists

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Sewanee volleyball team rolled to a sweep of the Mississippi University for Women in a non-conference match Thursday evening from Pohl Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Sewanee started the match with an 8-2 run that saw the visitors take the opening set, 25-16. Not only did the Tigers record a .429 attack percentage (14-2-28), but they limited the home team to a .077 hitting percentage (7-5-26).

-In the second set, the teams played consistently throughout, but thanks to a -.115 attack percentage by MUW (4-7-26) and Sewanee's 11 kills, the Tigers cruised to a 25-18 win.

-Sewanee kept the momentum high in the third set, winning 25-17 on 14 kills to the Owls' seven. Leading 12-11, the Tigers put the match away with a 7-2 run.

HELPING WITH 2,500 KILLS
-In the second set, senior setter Constance Connolly surpassed the 2,500-assist mark in her career. The senior has averaged 9.17 per set this season and has 706 on the year, which is tops in the league.

-The Germantown, Tenn. native is currently fourth on the all-time list in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) with 2,517. She will need 154 to pass Katie McCormack from BSC for third all-time.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Lilly Reilly and Olivia Nichols led Sewanee with eight kills each. Nichols added a match-high 14 digs.

-Ellie Pedersen and Stephanie Price each had seven kills, while Sydney White posted 10 digs.

-Constance Connolly had 36 of the team's 39 assists and had four service aces.

-The 12 errors Sewanee committed in the match are the fewest this season, tying with Piedmont on Aug. 31.

MUW KEY STATISTICS
-Tori Weir led the Owls with six kills, while Sadie Mitchell recorded 11 digs.

UP NEXT
Sewanee will resume SAA play on Saturday with a match against co-leader Birmingham-Southern.
