No. 16 Sewanee falls at No. 1 Emory

ATLANTA (April 1, 2017) – The No. 16 ranked Sewanee women's tennis team dropped a 9-0 contest at No. 1 ranked Emory, Friday.

The host Eagles have not lost a NCAA Division III contest this season. The defeat dropped the Tigers to 12-5 overall. All five Sewanee losses have come against national-ranked top-15 teams.

After Emory swept all three doubles matches, No. 48 ranked Paula Castro defeated Darby Duval 6-3, 6-3. Michelle DeMeo then topped Haley Tucker at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2 while No. 8 Daniela Lopez defeated Christina Merchant 6-4, 4-6, 10-2.

At No. 6, Elaine Vernoff earned a 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 victory against Meredith Heitland while No. 1 ranked Bridget Harding finally put away Clementina Davila at No. 1, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).

Finally, No. 5 ranked Michelle Satterfield rallied after losing the first set 1-6 against Ellie Czura. Satterfield won the second 7-6 (7-2) and then took the third-set tiebreaker 14-12.

Sewanee quickly returns to action at Birmingham-Southern, Saturday.
