No. 16 Sewanee sweeps Oglethorpe

SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 1, 2017) – The No. 16 Sewanee women's tennis team continued to dominate Southern Athletic Association (SAA) teams with a 9-0 sweep against Oglethorpe, Saturday.

The Tigers are now 2-0 in league play in 2017. Sewanee has never lost an SAA contest. The Tigers are 39-0 all-time since the league was founded in 2012-13.

Sewanee opened with three wins in doubles. At No. 1 Clementina Davila and Darby Duval topped Johnson and Dattilo, 8-4. At No. 2, Ellie Czura and Christina Merchant defeated Cruz and Sickling 8-0 while at No. 3 Bea Benavides and Haley Tucker rolled past Cranford and Wilcox, 8-2.

In singles, Sewanee won every match except one in straight sets. At No. 2, Merchant topped Dottilo 6-0, 6-1 while at No. 3 Tucker rolled past Cranford 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 4, Duval had little trouble with Cruz winning 6-3, 6-0. At No. 5, Childress continued her great season with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Wilcox while Mary Jane McCaghren crushed Aboard 6-2, 6-0.

Finally, at No. 1, Davila outlasted Johnson after losing the first set 2-6, winning the final two frames 6-2, 10-5.

Sewanee quickly returns to action with its third match in three days, Sunday. The Tigers host Berry at 9:00 a.m.
