PASADENA, Calif. (March 22, 2017) – The No. 14 ranked Sewanee women's tennis team earned another ranked win Wednesday as the Tigers topped No. 38 Caltech, 8-1.
Sewanee is now 8-4 with ranked wins over Caltech, No. 15 Mary Washington, and No. 28 Redlands. The Tigers' only losses this season have come against No. 6 Chicago, No. 13 Johns Hopkins, No. 11 Amherst, and No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Sewanee was dominant in doubles. At No. 1 Darby Duval and Clementina Davila rolled over Kana Moriyama and Julia Reisler, 8-2. At No. 2, Ellie Czura and Christina Merchant crushed Angelica Zhou and Alexandra Bodrova 8-1 while at No. 3 Sara Thompson and Bea Benavides blanked Vinci Chen and Erin Wang, 8-0.
At No. 1 singles, Davila kept rolling with a pair of 6-1 set wins against Moriyama. After winning the first set 7-6 (7-0), Czura closed out her No. 2 singles contest against Reisler by winning the second set, 6-3.
At No. 4 Duval split the first two sets against Bodrova 4-6, 7-6. In the third-set tiebreaker the Tiger freshman dug deep closing out Bodrova 10-3.
At No. 5 Meredith Heitland topped Wang in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 while at No. 6 Mary Jane McCaghren earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Chen.
