SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 12, 2017) – Ever since the beginning of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) the Sewanee women's team has not lost a conference match. That streak continued Sunday as the No. 13 Tigers earned their 41st SAA win with an 8-1 victory over Centre.
Sewanee is now 2-0 this season while Centre fell to 1-1 early in 2017.
The Tigers opened play as Haley Tucker and Taylor Sprouse rolled over Kenny Snow and Zena Maddox 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Ellie Czura and Maggie Crumbliss then rolled over Aliza Williams and Abigail Kent at No. 2 doubles, 8-3.
Sewanee then added to its lead at No. 1 doubles when Clementina Davila and Darby Duval closed out Neha Rao and Emily Zelichenok at 8-5.
As singles play opened, the Tigers won their first three matches. At No. 5, Tucker defeated Courtney DeLong 6-0, 6-2 while at No. 3 Taylor Childress had little trouble with Kent winning 6-1, 6-2.
At the No. 1 position, Davila rallied back after dropping the first set 6-1 against Rao. The Tiger junior answered back with a 6-1 second-set win and by earning a 7-5 victory in the third.
Centre finally got on the board when Williams outlasted Czura in a third-set tiebreaker 6-1, 5-7, 11-9.
In the remaining two contests Crumbliss won at No. 4 against Zelichenok 6-2, 6-0 and Duval topped Maddox at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0.
Sewanee returns to action with a 9:00 a.m. contest against Transylvania, Saturday.
