SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 10, 2017) – The No. 13 ranked Sewanee women's tennis team made quick work of visiting Piedmont with a perfect 9-0 sweep Friday in the Tigers' season opener.
Sewanee opened by dominating all three doubles matches. At No. 3, Maura McCrary and Sara Thompson crushed Burkett and Rivera with a perfect 8-0 victory. Over on court one, Maggie Crumbliss and Haley Tucker pulled off another perfect win blanking Bucholz and Floyd, 8-0.
Finally, the Tigers closed out doubles as Bea Benavides and Taylor Sprouse earned an 8-2 victory over Blackwell and Smith at No. 2.
In singles, Sewanee kept rolling. Thompson remained perfect on the day with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Durden Smith at No. 3. Abbie Vaughn then won in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 against Rivera at No. 5.
With the win in hand, Sewanee did not let up. At No. 4, Benavides routed Floyd 6-2, 6-1 while at No. 6 Meredith Heitland rolled over Tabea Soelter in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Finally, Darby Duval rolled over Bucholz at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1 while at No. 2, Sprouse had little trouble with Amanda Blackwell winning 6-2, 6-1.
Sewanee quickly returns to action with a 9:00 a.m. match against Centre, Sunday.
