ORANGE, Calif. (March 13, 2016) – The No. 12 ranked Sewanee women's tennis team earned an 8-1 win over No. 40 Chapman, Saturday, at the Anaheim Hills Tennis Club.
The Tigers are now 7-4 overall.
Sewanee opened by winning two of three doubles matches. After Lindsey Liles and Clementina Davila lost for the first time this spring at No. 1, Bea Benavides and Mary Jane McCaghren defeated Nicole Fouts and Danielle Simmons, 8-2.
At No. 3 Kate Johnston and Elske Parker rolled over Danielle Simmons and Maya Nowak, 8-1.
In singles action, Christina Merchant topped Andrea Hammer 7-5, 7-5 while teammate Maggie Crumbliss was leading Madeline Saunders at No. 2, 4-2, when the Chapman junior had to retire due to an injury.
At No. 3 Taylor Childress rolled over Fouts in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 while Annie Veron topped Simmons at No. 4 with a pair of 6-0 sets.
Finally, freshman Haley Tucker blanked Thimanthi Withana 6-0, 6-0 while Sara Thompson defeated Nowak 6-1, 6-1.
Sewanee returns to action Monday against Bowdoin.
