CLAREMONT, Calif. (March 11, 2016) – Playing arguably the toughest schedule in NCAA Division III Women's Tennis, the No. 12 Sewanee women's tennis team earned an impressive 5-3 road win at No. 7 Carnegie Mellon, Friday.
The Tigers are now 6-4 overall. Sewanee has already played ranked teams No. 10 Washington, No. 3 Emory, No. 14 MIT, No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer, and No. 9 Johns Hopkins this spring.
Sewanee opened the contest by winning two of three doubles matches.
At No. 1 doubles, Lindsey Liles and Clementina Davila stayed unbeaten as a team with a strong 8-1 route of Cori Sidell and Minami Makino. After CMU won at No. 2, the Tiger duo of Annie Veron and Maggie Crumbliss defeated Nicholle Torres and Abbey Hamstrea at No. 3, 8-4.
In singles action, the match remained close. After Liles defeated Brooke Tsu at No. 1, 6-1, 6-4, Torres defeated Davila at No. 2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
After CMU then tied the match at 3-3 with another long three-set win at No. 4, Tiger sophomore Taylor Childress defeated Makino at No. 5, 6-1, 6-2.
The Tigers then wrapped up the victory when Christina Merchant defeated Sidell at No. 3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
At No. 6, Katie Lai and Haley Tucker were both in a close match (6-7, 6-2 - tiebreaker 9-9) will rain stopped the conclusion of that contest.
Sewanee quickly returns to action at Chapman, Saturday, at 5:00 (PST).
