SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 14, 2016) – The No. 12 Sewanee women's tennis team split a pair of late Saturday matches with a 7-2 loss against No. 2 Emory and a 9-0 win over Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe, Centre.
The nationally ranked Tigers and their national powerhouse regional-rival Eagles opened play with some great doubles matches.
After Emory won at No. 2, 8-1, Lindsey Liles and Clementina Davila took on No. 2-ranked Bridget Harding and Katarina Su. The No. 11-ranked Tiger duo outlasted the Eagle pair, 8-6.
Against No. 11 Washington University on Friday and No. 2 Emory, Devlia and Liles finished the weekend with two straight victories over a nationally ranked top-10 doubles team. The Tiger pair are a perfect 4-0 this season after defeating Centre later on Saturday.
Emory then took a 2-1 lead when Taylor Cosme and Stephanie Loutsenko outlasted Annie Veron and Maggie Crumbliss by the same 8-6 score.
In singles action, the Eagles had straight-set wins at No. 4, No. 2, No 3, and No. 5. Sewanee added to its score when Veron topped Loutsenko in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6.
Finally, Liles lost to No. 3-ranked Cosme at No. 1 singles in a marathon three and a half hour contest that featured a long three-set tiebreaker.
Later in the evening, Sewanee bounced back by hammering Centre. After sweeping all three doubles matches, Davila won at No. 1 singles in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
Taylor Childress defeated Emily Zelichenok at No. 2 6-2, 4-6, 10-1 while Haley Tucker topped Courtney DeLong in straight sets at No. 3 6-1, 6-2.
Sara Thompson also won in straight sets with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory against Kenny Snow while Maura McCrary defeated Mary Chapin Snow 6-0, 6-1.
Finally, Bea Benavides rolled past Casey Blair in straight sets 6-3. 6-2.
Sewanee continues its tough schedule with a 2:00 p.m. match against Piedmont, Friday.
