LEXINGTON, Va. (March 21, 2015) – The No. 14 Sewanee women's tennis team earned another ITA ranked win Saturday, as the Tigers topped No. 12 Case Western 7-2 in Lexington, Va.
The Tigers are now 9-3 overall with ranked wins over No. 11 DePauw, No. 22 Redlands, and No. 12 Case Western. In fact, Sewanee's only losses came against No. 1 Johns Hopkins, No. 7 Carnegie Mellon, and a long six-hour match against No. 11 Washington & Lee.
Sewanee opened the match with wins in doubles at No. 1 and No. 3. At No.1 the Tiger team of Bronte Goodhue and Lindsey Liles earned an 8-4 win over Marianne Bonnano and Surya Khailkar. At No. 3 Sewanee's Maggie Crumbliss and Annie Veron topped Sarah Berchuck and Michelle Djohan, 8-2.
With a 2-1 lead, the Tigers kept rolling in singles.
Liles earned a straight set win at No. 2 over Bonnano 6-2, 6-1 while Veron crushed Berchuck at No. 6, 6-1, 6-3.
At No. 5, Clementina Davila held on after a tough 7-6 (3) first set for a 6-2 victory over Khailkar.
The Tigers also had individual victories at No. 1 and No. 3. At the top position, Goodhue breezed to an opening 6-1 first-set win. However, Case Western's Nithya Kanagasegar rallied to win the second set 7-5. In the final set, the score remained close with both players holding serve. However, after Goodhue got a break at 6-5, the Chattanooga, Tenn., native served out the win at 7-5.
At No. 3 freshman Christina Merchant opened with a 7-6 (4) win in the first set over Sara Zargham. However, the Case Western junior rallied to win the second set at 7-5. In the third-set tiebreaker Merchant was able to prevail with a 12-10 victory.
With career-win No. 499 Sewanee Head Coach Conchie Shackelford and the Tigers will look to make history Sunday with a 9:00 a.m. (EST) against No. 23 Mary Washington.
