Rhodes holds on in the second half; downs Sewanee, 49-46

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 8, 2015) – In front of an energetic crowd, the Sewanee women's basketball team fell just short Sunday, falling to Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Rhodes, 49-46, inside Juhan Gymnasium.

After honoring seniors McKenzie Jones and Kayla Sewell, Sewanee came out of the gate slowly. Rhodes opened a 5-2 lead over the first two minutes.

That changed when Sewell made a layup at the 15:05 mark. That opened an 18-5 run by the Tigers over the next 10 minutes. After a three by Kelley Myers, Sewanee led by 10, 20-10, with 4:59 left in the opening half.

Rhodes rallied back after a jumper from Erin Deery. The Lynx closed the half on a 13-0 run.

In the second half, the score remained close. Neither team led by more three points until the 9:31 mark. With Rhodes ahead by four, 35-31, Sewanee's offense struggled to find any rhythm. During an eight-minute stretch, Sewanee did not score. The Tigers finally stopped their drought when Jamie Chauvin hit a jumper with 5:03 to play.

By that point the Lynx led by eight, 41-33. From there, two jumpers and four free throws were enough for Rhodes to hold on.

Overall, Sewanee shot the ball well. The Tigers made 41.5 percent of their attempts while limiting Rhodes to a 27.9 field goal percentage.

The Tigers were undone by 20 turnovers, including eight in the second half.

Individually, Chauvin led Sewanee with 13 points and six rebounds. Savannah Rose and Casey Hassett also finished in double figures with 10 points each.

Dy'Nelle Todman led Rhodes with 12 points.

Sewanee will now open a four-game SAA road trip with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Millsaps, Friday.
