No. 21 Sewanee shows depth with a pair of 9-0 wins over Piedmont and Covenant

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 13, 2015) – The No. 21 Sewanee women's tennis team opened the season with a pair of 9-0 wins against Piedmont and Covenant Friday inside the Charlotte Guerry Tennis Center.

The Tigers showed its depth and talent as 14 student-athletes saw action. That included an outstanding and tough performance by Sydney Peterson. Peterson won her No. 5 singles match against Piedmont's Morgan Cowart 6-0, 4-6, 10-7. More impressively, in the second set, Peterson became injured but would not default and quit. Limiting the rest of the match, Peterson finished the match and won.

Additionally in that contest, No. 15 Bronte Goodhue, Annie Veron, Clementina Davila, Kate Johnston, and Mariah Smith all won in straight sets.

The Tigers also swept all three doubles matches.  Lindsey Liles and Goodhue earned an 8-1 win at No. 1 while Veron and Taylor Childress did not drop a game with an 8-0 victory at No. 2. Emily Sirbaugh and Ann-Meg Keatley then defeated Piedmont's No. 3 team, 8-4.

In the nightcap against Covenant, Sewanee continued to roll.

Again the Tigers swept the doubles matches. Along with Liles and Goodhue, the Tiger teams of Davila and Christina Merchant and Johnston and Elske Parker all won.
