Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 3, 2015) – In a match that had four sets decided by two points, Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern outlasted the Sewanee volleyball team 3-2, Saturday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers opened the match by holding on to a 27-25 first-set victory. After BSC took the second at 26-24, the Panthers dominated the third set with a .459 attack percentage.
Down 2-1 heading into the fourth, Sewanee bounced back. Back-to-back attack errors by BSC gave Sewanee a 22-20 lead. After two Panther points, Elizabeth Gill put Sewanee back in front with a kill. The Tigers then closed the set at 25-23 after BSC had another error and Caroline Montgomery had a kill.
In the deciding fifth set, Sewanee took an 11-8 lead after a BSC error. However, the Panthers answered back with six straight points. The Tigers stayed alive at 14-11 after BSC's Katie McCormack had an attack error. BSC finally closed the match when Jeneva Salter ripped her 32nd kill of the match.
Overall, Sewanee hit .122 while BSC finished at .203.
Individually, Maggie Stanford had 12 kills while Walker Buxton finished with 33 assists. Libero Sara Jayne Sutton led the defense with 21 digs. Diamond Stewart added 19 digs while Buxton (15) and Caroline Owens (12) also had double-digit stops.
Sewanee quickly returns to action with a noon match against Millsaps, Sunday.
