Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 11, 2015) – Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Hendrix rallied from a two-goal deficit to win in double overtime over the Sewanee men's soccer team, 3-2, Sunday, at Puett Field.
The Tigers were in control early. Sewanee scored a pair of first-half goals from Bobby Zolper and Max Hawes to lead 2-0 by the 25-minute mark. Overall, Sewanee outshot the Warriors in the opening 45 minutes, 9-3.
Down by two to start the second half, Hendrix needed a spark. After nearly scoring on a counter, Hendrix's Ryan Stanowski connected on a hard shot that cut Sewanee's lead down to one with 31 minutes to play.
As play continued, the Tigers nearly scored again when Chris Ottley missed a hard cross in the box. As Hendrix resumed play, the Warriors were able to move down the field quickly. Moments later, Hendrix played a ball into the box which bounced off a Tiger defender for an own goal.
With the match now tied, Sewanee stayed aggressive with five more shots in regulation. However, each scoring opportunity was either wide or saved by Hendrix keeper Jerry Thomeczek.
In the first overtime period, Sewanee continued to dominate possession. The Tigers fired four shots while Hendrix was limited to only one touch in its offensive third. Again Thomeczek came up big for the Warriors with two key saves in the first extra frame.
In the second overtime period, Hendrix struck quickly. After winning possession at midfield, the Warriors played a long pass down the sideline to Jacob Pierce. Pierce then sent a cross to Daniel Sweeney at the top of the box. Sweeney fired a first shot that was saved by Tiger keeper Will Merriman. On the ensuing rebound attempt, Sweeney connected again with a hard shot that went over Merriman into the back of the net.
Overall, Sewanee finished with a 24-11 advantage in shots. The Tigers also had 11 corners. Thomeczek played well for Hendrix with nine saves.
Merriman finished with four saves for Sewanee while Kyle Johnston led the offense with seven shots. Hawes, Matt Hawse, Bobby Zolper, and Chris Haberstroh all finished with multiple shots.
Sewanee returns to the pitch for a 7:30 p.m. road match at Millsaps, Friday.
