SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 30, 2015) – Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Oglethorpe slipped past the Sewanee women's basketball team, 79-77, Friday in a fast paced contest inside Juhan Gymnasium.
A close game throughout, Kristen Kennebrew connected on a deep three with four seconds remaining to give the Stormy Petrels the lead for good. At the time, OU was down 77-76 after Jamie Chauvin made the back-end of a pair of free throws for Sewanee.
Overall, the contest featured 15 lead changes and 12 ties. That included both teams being knotted at 41-41 at halftime.
Both teams had little trouble scoring early. Sewanee made 40.7 percent of its first-half shots while Oglethorpe connected on 17-of-39 (43.6 percent) of its attempts.
Sewanee held its biggest lead of the evening with 7:57 to play. A layup by Haley Lyerly pushed the Tigers' advantage to seven, 70-63. However, OU answered back with an 11-3 run over the next five minutes.
With OU ahead 74-73 with 2:53 remaining, Chauvin stepped up. The junior guard from Nashville scored five straight points which set up the game-winner for Kennebrew.
Sewanee did have a chance to extend the lead late in the contest after Hannah McCormack grabbed a loose ball rebound off a missed Chauvin shot with 48 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, an ill-advised three by the Tigers gave the ball back to OU with 44 seconds to play.
Individually, Chauvin finished with a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double. McCormack also finished in double figures with 21 points while Casey Hassett added 15 and Rebekah Faulkner finished with 10.
Despite battling foul trouble, senior Kayla Sewell finished with nine points, six rebounds, and seven assists.
Ciaira Hughes led OU with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Guard Emily Buck also played well for Oglethorpe with a game-high 26 points.
Sewanee continues its SAA homestand with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Berry, Sunday.
