No. 20 Tigers dominate Hanover in NCAA Tournament First Round

ATLANTA (May 9, 2014) – For the second straight season, the No. 20 Sewanee women's tennis team opened the NCAA Tournament with a victory. On Friday, on the campus of Emory University, the nationally-ranked Tigers earned a 6-0 win against Heartland Conference Champion Hanover College in first-round action.

The win pushed Sewanee's overall record to 21-3. The Tigers will now take on No. 19 rival Washington & Lee on Saturday.

Sewanee opened by dominating the doubles matches. At No. 1 Bronte Goodhue and Lindsey Liles shutout Mallory Noble and Allison Poston, 8-0.

Like their teammates, Kate Johnston and Elske Parker earned a perfect 8-0 win against Kelsey Jones and Kelly Gehlbach at No. 3.

Finally, Annie Veron and Mary Taylor Tepper breezed past Mackenzie Spicer and Kirby Lantz at No. 2 by a score of 8-3.

With a 3-0 lead in hand, Sewanee continued to roll in singles. Goodhue dominated Spicer at No. 1 with another perfect score. The junior from nearby Chattanooga, Tenn., earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Veron then dropped only a single point at No. 3, winning over Jones 6-1, 6-0.

Finally, Johnston completed the sweep with a win over Gehlbach at No. 5 by a score of 6-0, 6-1.

In the remaining three matches, Sewanee was up at by big scores on each court. That included Liles being only two games away from a perfect sweep over Noble at No. 2.
