No. 19 W&L tops No. 20 Sewanee in NCAA Tournament

ATLANTA (May 10, 2014) – The 19th-ranked Washington and Lee University Generals advanced to the third round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships with a 5-0 win over the 20th-ranked Sewanee women's tennis on Saturday at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on the Emory University.

The Generals improved to 18-2 for the campaign with the victory, while Sewanee closed out its season with an overall record of 21-4.

The contest of a rematch of last year's close-fought second-round match at Emory between the two squads, which the Tigers pulled out by a 5-4 score. The two teams also met earlier in the 2014 regular season, as Washington and Lee came away with a 7-2 win.

After Sewanee swept the doubles contests during the 2013 NCAA Tournament meeting between the two squads, the Generals returned the favor this season, taking a 3-0 lead after doubles play.  Washington and Lee's third doubles pairing of Brooke Donnelly and Claire Cahill struck the opening blow with an 8-1 win over Sewanee's Kate Johnston and Elske Parker.

Meghan Buell and Chelsea Mixson followed with an 8-0 win over Annie Veron and Mary Taylor Tepper at second doubles, and Sonja Meighan and Patricia Kirkland rounded out the sweep with an 8-1 victory at first doubles over Bronte Goodhue and Lindsey Liles.

Washington & Lee's Mary Elizabeth Shutley earned a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win at sixth singles over Sewanee's Parker to put the Generals a match away from clinching. At the fourth singles match, Donnelly would complete the victory for Washington and Lee with a 6-2, 6-0 win over the Tigers' Tepper.

Four singles matches were unfinished at the time of decision, with Meighan leading at first singles 6-2, 2-3 over Goodhue, Liles up a set over Buell at second singles, 6-3, 3-4, Kirkland leading 6-3, 3-2 at third singles over Veron, and Mixson holding a 7-5, 1-0 advantage over Johnston.

Washington and Lee will advance to take on the winner of the other second round match at the Atlanta site between top-ranked Emory and Berry College, on Sunday, May 11th at 1:00 p.m.
